WELCOME TO PRE-KINDY LIBRARY TIME
Reading and rhyming abound in the Pre-Kindy library lessons!
At this early stage of schooling, the children are learning what a great place of reading and learning the library can be through listening to and participating in:
· picture books
· big books
· poetry books
· books without words
· plus rhymes and songs
These are all linked to the themes taught each month in the Pre-Kindy classroom. Textual features of books such as the cover, spine, title, author and illustrator are also incidentally shown to the children.
The books are all initially chosen by the teacher librarian, but as the year advances, children have opportunity to choose a book to be read based on specific criteria of what to search for, such as:
· A particular picture
· The letter on the top right hand corner of the cover
· A book that has a special red sticker on it (Premier’s Reading Challenge)
This searching enhances their scanning skills in readiness for their own reading, while preparing them to know how to search for
books as they enter into Kindergarten, where they will be able to borrow books for themselves.
